There are a variety of healthy, fresh, organic foods which we can use to supplement our pet’s diets and most pet lovers would know that dogs absolutely love peanut butter! This is a partnership “made in heaven” and the best part is, that it is very good for them.
However, the best kind to give your pup, is not the peanut butter that we would eat, as it is packed with sugar and/or artificial sweeteners and it also contains other chemicals and preservatives; some of which are toxic to dogs. The best kind would be organic, unsweetened peanut butter. In actual fact, peanut butter is an excellent source of protein and Omega 3’s.
Most pet foods and dry kibble contain high levels of protein, but not in its purest form and the manufacturing processes used, eliminates a lot of the nutrients in the food. Thus, adding organic, unsweetened peanut butter to your pup’s diet, is an excellent way of supplementing their protein intake, with something which is both tasty and very nutritious.
It contains healthy fats, various nutrients and antioxidants. It is also an excellent source of Vitamins B and E.
When you decide on buying your furry friend his or her own peanut butter, it is important to remember the following:
• Organic, unsweetened is the healthiest route to go.
• Normal (processed) peanut butter is packed with sugar, chemicals and preservatives.
• Sugar free (or Lite) peanut butter contains artificial sweeteners, which are toxic to dogs.
The latter contains xylitol, which is highly lethal to dogs. This substance can severely affect the organs, it causes convulsions and can ultimately lead to death. A pup that has ingested xylitol would show signs of muscle weakness (an inability to walk), shaking and/or vomiting. If your pup has ingested xylitol, it is advisable to seek immediate Veterinarian care.
Many a pet parent has witnessed how our furry friends can “beg” for human food, with saddened eyes. Leaving us with feelings of guilt. However, although you may consider offering your pup some of your peanut butter, out of the goodness of your heart, the best practice would be to refrain from offering your pup “normal” peanut butter altogether. Your intentions may overall be good, but the organic route is the safest for your furry friend.
There are a variety of benefits to giving your pup organic, unsweetened peanut butter. Not only do dogs love the taste, but it also comes with an array of health benefits. Omega 3’s are very well known as being essential fatty acids and for promoting a healthy heart. But, it also has a variety of other health benefits, such as its anti-inflammatory properties.
Vitamin B is well known to contribute to a shiny coat, a healthy skin, as well as healthy nails. As an added benefit, Vitamin E is known to support the immune system, protecting our furry friends from disease. Furthermore, the healthy fats contained in organic, unsweetened peanut butter, supply our pups with a healthy dose of energy.
There are various ways of supplementing your pup’s diet with organic, unsweetened peanut butter. Although, it is not as if your pup won’t gladly accept this amazing treat! But, one such way would be to offer them a healthy, delicious doggy treat, or biscuit and there are a variety of doggy treats available, in which peanut butter is used as the main falvoring.
At PetsWell Pantry we manufacture a variety of fresh organic meals, as well as a variety of healthy doggy (and feline) treats and we use only the finest, fresh, organic ingredients; with organic unsweetened peanut butter being at the top of our list.
Another way in which some pet parents offer their pup’s organic, unsweetened peanut butter, is by filling a “Kong toy” with it. This serves not only as a very tasty treat, it also keeps them entertained and busy for long periods of time.
To ensure that you offer your pup only the best and purest, when it comes to organic, unsweetened peanut butter, one should familiarize yourself with the product labels. Ensure to read the labels of both the peanut butter in tubs, as well as the labels found on other doggy treats and biscuits. Always ensure to buy the organic, unsweetened type.
Something important that one should also remember, is that although peanut butter is very good for dogs, one should never give them too much. Despite its variety of health benefits, too much peanut butter can lead to possible weight gain, as well as gastrointestinal problems. This is particularly true, if it is not the organic, unsweetened type.
Another great benefit peanut butter has to offer, is that it can assist you when having to medicate your pet. If your pup refuses to take a tablet, you may lightly coat the tablet with organic, unsweetened peanut butter and your pup will gladly take this from you.
