As loving pet parents, we understand the importance of a nutritious and balanced diet, but it can sometimes become difficult to determine how much food to give our pups. One of the main reasons for this is the huge variety of brands available, as this may cause uncertainty about how much food is too much or too little. However, your local Veterinarian can guide you, according to your pet’s personal needs.

Many people have a different approach to feeding their furry friends. Some people only feed their pet once a day, whereas others may leave their pet’s food out the whole day, so he or she may eat when they are hungry. Some people have adopted the habit of feeding their pet twice a day. But, which of these options is the best for feeding our beloved pet?

According to most experts the best approach to feeding our furry friends would be to feed them twice a day. But, you need to ensure not to feed them two full portions. The ideal is to split the daily portion into two and feed half a portion in the morning and the second half in the evening. If you have a pup under five months of age, it is recommended to feed them three to four times a day. But, it would be best to confirm this with your local Veterinarian.

We may also find that our new adopted furry friend may be a little sceptical to eat in the beginning. But, it is important to remember that he or she may need some time to adjust to their new family and their new environment. However, we can train our pups to eat at scheduled times and to do so, you may try the following approach:

  • Prepare your pet’s meal
  • Raise the bowl above your pet’s head
  • Command or allow him or her to sit
  • Then place the bowl on the floor and allow him or her to eat
  • Leave the food for ten to twenty minutes and if he or she has not eaten, you may take the food away
  • Continue to do this for a few days, as your pet will soon realize when it is time to eat
  • Try to feed your pet at the same time(s) every day

Something which is of great importance, is to create a regular routine, as this also allows us the opportunity to monitor our pet’s health. When their food is left out the whole day, one may not immediately notice if he or she is not eating and a loss of appetite is the first indication that your furry friend is not feeling well. Feeding them twice a day not only allows us to monitor their health, this also helps to keep their tummies regular.

The next question which comes to mind is “what the best food would be to feed our pups?” The answer to this would be a high quality kibble. However, if you wish to keep your furry friend happy and healthier for longer, you should consider supplementing their meals with fresh organic foods, as this offers a variety of health benefits.
